Sergi Dominguez Leaves Barcelona for Dinamo Zagreb in €1.2 Million Deal
Barcelona’s young defender Sergi Dominguez has permanently moved to Dinamo Zagreb for €1.2 million. Barcelona has secured a 20% sell-on clause and an option to re-sign him if Dinamo sells the player in the future.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Dinamo Zagreb has welcomed Sergi Dominguez, a 20-year-old center-back who started at Barcelona‘s famous La Masia academy. Dominguez impressed with his ball-playing ability and aerial strength, making six first-team appearances for Barcelona during the 2024-25 season. Dinamo Zagreb, who lost on the league title to Rijeka and are working hard to regain their top spot in Croatian football, moved quickly to acquire him for a defensive rebuild. The transfer includes a €1.2 million fixed fee to Barcelona, with potential future incentives.
According to a previous report we published, Barcelona is expected to sign Roony Bardghji from FC Copenhagen for a fee between €2 million and €3 million.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR BOTH CLUBS
For Dinamo Zagreb, this acquisition supports their ambition to remain dominant in the Croatian HNL and competitive in Europe. They failed to top the league in the 2024-25 season and are preparing for Champions League qualification. Adding a La Masia-trained defender with first-team experience bolsters their back line. For Barcelona, parting ways with Dominguez is part of a broader effort to streamline the squad and generate funds. Thanks to the sell-on clause and buyback option, the club maintains a stake in the player’s future.
According to a previous report we published, Barcelona wants to keep Frenkie de Jong, and talks about a new contract are progressing well.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR DOMINGUEZ AND BOTH TEAMS?
Dominguez will join Dinamo Zagreb for pre-season training as they prepare for European qualifying matches. He could play in their first Champions League qualifying match next month. Dinamo Zagreb is targeting another strong domestic campaign after failing to finish at the top last season, with last matchday that could see the title being lifted by Hajduk Split, Dinamo Zagreb or the team that was crowned champions, Rijeka. Barcelona continues its squad reshuffle, with additional departures expected before the end of the month. Their pre-season tour begins soon as they aim to confirm back to back titles in La Liga as well as 2 other titles and a CL semi-final.
