Sevilla have fired head coach Javier García Pimienta due to poor performances. The decision was announced just two days after Sevilla’s fourth consecutive league loss – a 1-0 defeat to Valencia.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sevilla head coach Javier García Pimienta was sacked just two days after Sevilla suffered their fourth consecutive defeat and a seventh in their last nine matches in all competitions. The 1-0 loss to Valencia leaves Sevilla hovering six points above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining.
García Pimienta served as Sevilla’s coach for just nine months after joining them from Las Palmas in July last year. His coaching could only lead the team to 13th place in La Liga after 31 matches with just 36 points, seven above relegation-threatened Leganes who have a game in hand.
In an official statement, the club said, “Sevilla have decided to finish their contract with head coach Javier García Pimienta and that he will not continue to lead the first team. The club thanks him for his professional attitude and his dedication throughout his time at the club and wishes him the best of luck in his professional future.”
“The sports management believes that, despite the intention to complete the project with Javier García Pimienta until the end of the season, the current dynamics make it necessary to make this decision to seek to achieve the objective of ensuring the club remains in the First Division.” they further added.
WHO REPLACES THE COACH?
Joaquin Caparros will take charge of the club on an interim basis until the end of the season. He was previously the sporting director of the club and had even coached them last season after the club parted ways with Javier Calleja mid-season.
This is Sevilla’s sixth managerial change in the last three years as the club continues to struggle to find success this season. Their only remaining aim for the season is to steer clear of the relegation zone in the remaining seven matches.
WHAT NEXT FOR SEVILLA?
Sevilla will resume their La Liga campaign next weekend against Deportivo Alaves at home needing a win to boost their efforts to pull clear of the drop zone and salvage a poor season.
