Sofyan Amrabat Seals Surprise Deadline Day Loan Move to Real Betis

Real Betis have announced the signing of Sofyan Amrabat on a loan deal from Fenerbahçe. The Moroccan midfielder joins the Spanish side for the 2025-26 season, but the deal does not include an option for Betis to buy him permanently.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Sofyan Amrabat, 29, has completed a move to Real Betis just before the transfer deadline. He arrives on loan from Fenerbahçe, with Betis set to cover his entire salary for the season. There was no option to make the deal permanent included in the agreement.

Amrabat, a key player for Morocco at the FIFA World Cup and a player with experience at Manchester United, Fiorentina, and Club Brugge, made this move after expressing his preference to join Betis. His arrival follows on the heels of Betis also signing Antony, signaling a busy end to the transfer window for the Seville club.

BETIS AND AMRABAT: SEASON SO FAR

Real Betis enter September hoping to improve on a disappointing start to the La Liga season, where they currently sit in 8th position with five points from their first four matches. The team has struggled with consistency, especially after the departures and injuries that weakened their midfield; they are currently aiming for a top-four spot in La Liga after one win and one draw in their opening matches.

Amrabat joins a midfield needing more control and physical presence. Last season, Amrabat made 31 appearances in all competitions for Fenerbahçe, scoring once and providing solid defensive work in midfield duels. Fenerbahçe has started the 2025-26 Süper Lig season strongly, competing for top positions, reflecting Amrabat’s potential impact at Betis.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BETIS AND AMRABAT?

Betis face a crucial fixture after the international break when they visit relegation candidate Levante, who are just one of two teams yet to win a point, alongside Girona.

Amrabat is expected to be available for selection and could make his debut, while Betis will also hope new signing Antony adds some much-needed attacking threat. The team’s aim is to climb the La Liga standings and push closer to the European qualification spots as the season progresses, following their finish in sixth place last season which earned them Europa League football.
