Steve Cooper Appointed as Brøndby’s New Head Coach on Three-Year Deal
Brøndby IF have named Steve Cooper as their new manager. The Welsh manager has agreed to a contract that will run until his countryman Aaron Ramsey – also with the club – heads over the hillman duties as boss.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Cooper, known for his spells as manager of Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, has officially taken the reins at Brøndby after a deal was agreed to sign a three-year contract. The club acted to bring in a Premier League-calibre manager following their painful defeat to KRC Genk in the UEFA Europa Conference League first qualifying round this summer. Brøndby reached the final qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League last year before claiming silverware, but they missed out on a taste of Europe altogether this term.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR BRONDBY
Brøndby have identified Cooper as a manager who can solve the side’s issues on the pitch and deliver success. He has track record of doing that, having done so at Nottingham Forest and Leicester City during his time in English football. With Brøndby going strong in the UEFA Champions League whilst fighting for domestic honours last season, the club’s current issues under his watch are clear to see.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR COOPER AND BRONDBY?
Cooper’s first match as Brøndby head coach comes against second-tier side Aalborg in the Danish Cup on Wednesday. He will look to make a fast start with a heavily rotated team at Aalborg Stadium. Brøndby have already tasted defeat to a lower-league side under his watch but can bounce back with an emphatic win this midweek. Lifting the Danish Cup later this season remains an achievable feat for Cooper’s men.
