Sunderland Secure Simon Adingra in Major Transfer From Brighton
Sunderland have agreed to sign Simon Adingra from Brighton in a deal worth €21 million, plus €3 million in add-ons. The Ivorian winger is set to become the club’s latest high-profile addition before the new Premier League season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Adingra has made 73 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing five assists during his time with the Seagulls, but last season, he struggled for consistent starts under new Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler. The 26-year-old made just 12 starts in the Premier League.
As per The Athletic, several clubs, including Everton, Leeds United, and Nottingham Forest, were interested in signing Adingra, but Sunderland were quick to close the deal. Personal terms have been agreed, and Adingra will undergo his medical before signing for the club.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Adingra’s arrival at Sunderland highlights the club’s ambition as they return to the Premier League. Regis Le Bris’ side have already acquired talents like Enzo Le Fée, Reinildo, Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, and Lotfi Rabei as they aim to establish themselves in the top flight.
Sunderland’s spending spree and improved recruitment have left them determined to compete against the big clubs after earning promotion. Last season, Sunderland finished second in the Championship, securing their place back in the top flight.
Sunderland will return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence.
WHAT NEXT?
Adingra will complete his medical and be unveiled as a Sunderland player before pre-season training begins. Sunderland’s first Premier League match is against West Ham, who finished in the bottom half last season, and they will be looking to make a strong start as they aim to cement their position in the top division.
