Szczesny Considers Two-Year Contract Extension with Barcelona
Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has confirmed that he has received a two-year contract extension offer from the club. He is taking time to make his decision, with family considerations as a priority.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 35-year-old Polish goalkeeper revealed that he has been offered the chance to extend his stay at Camp Nou beyond his current deal, which expires in June 2025. “I won’t hide the fact that I have an offer for a two-year contract extension. But I have to decide with my family what’s best for us,” Szczesny stated when discussing his future with the Catalan giants. Family factors will play an important role in his decision, with the goalkeeper noting that his family is happy in Barcelona, his son enjoys school there, and his wife appreciates their life in the city.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Szczesny joined Barcelona in October 2024 after coming out of retirement to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen. What began as a temporary solution has evolved into a remarkable chapter for both the player and the club. Since taking over as first-choice goalkeeper in January, Szczesny has transformed Barcelona’s fortunes, with the team currently on a 24-match unbeaten run across all competitions. The Polish keeper has been exceptional, recording 12 clean sheets in 23 appearances while suffering only one defeat (against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League).
Barcelona currently sit four points clear at the top of LaLiga, with just weeks remaining in the season. They have already claimed the Spanish Supercopa with Szczesny between the posts and remain in contention for both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, where they hold a commanding 4-0 lead over Dortmund heading into the second leg.
WHAT NEXT FOR SZCZESNY?
While contract negotiations continue in the background, Szczesny has made it clear that his focus remains on the pitch. “I don’t want to waste energy on contract negotiations or contemplating my future. I want to win every trophy in front of us and leave the contract talks to the club and my agent,” he previously stated. Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has reportedly been working to finalise the agreement, with only minor details left to resolve before Szczesny potentially commits until 2026, with an option for an additional year.
The former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper has also indicated that he would be open to staying with Barcelona even if it meant becoming the second choice when Ter Stegen returns from injury. With important fixtures remaining across three competitions, Szczesny’s immediate focus is on helping Barcelona secure what could be a historic treble before making his final decision on the contract extension.
