Takehiro Tomiyasu Leaves Arsenal After Contract Termination

Takehiro Tomiyasu has left Arsenal after both parties agreed to terminate his contract. This comes after a new injury setback. The Japanese defender will be a free agent and aims to return to football in late 2025.

WHY DID TOMIYASU LEAVE ARSENAL?

Tomiyasu and Arsenal agreed to end his contract, which was set to last until 2026, after months of talks. The decision was confirmed after he suffered another major injury, keeping him out for at least four more months. Tomiyasu joined Arsenal in 2021 for about £17 million but struggled with injuries in London. He hasn’t played since October 2024 and made only one appearance this season. This contributed to the decision to part ways.

ARSENAL’S RECENT FORM AND SQUAD CHANGES

Tomiyasu leaves with 84 appearances for Arsenal. His busiest campaign was in 2022/23 with 31 appearances. Last season, he played only six minutes in the Premier League before a knee injury in February. Arsenal have since bolstered their defence. Myles Lewis-Skelly is now a starter, and Riccardo Calafiori has been signed. Jurriën Timber and Ben White are regulars, making competition intense. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season, just two points behind the champions Liverpool, and are aiming for the title this time.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TOMIYASU AND ARSENAL?

At 26, Tomiyasu is still a desired defender. While recovering, clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in signing him when he’s fit. Arsenal are focusing on strengthening their defence and have shown interest in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze. Their next match is a Premier League opener against Manchester United. Both teams are keen to start the season well after a busy transfer window.
