Thibaut Courtois Confirms Desire to Extend Stay at Real Madrid

Thibaut Courtois has confirmed he is in talks with Real Madrid to extend his contract. He clearly wants to stay at the club for years to come.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Belgian goalkeeper is currently under contract until 2026, and he revealed that discussions are underway for an extension. Courtois said: “Yes, we are in contact and I want to stay!” Real Madrid are preparing to finalise a new deal next month, which would keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2028. This would see Courtois complete a full decade at the club as the first-choice goalkeeper and underlines the strong faith that Madrid retain in his abilities even after his recent injury setbacks.

KEY ROLE DESPITE RECENT INJURIES

Courtois missed most of the 2024-25 season with a serious knee injury but remains highly valued by the club. His previous performances were instrumental in their recent LaLiga and Champions League successes, and when the club considered bringing in a younger goalkeeper, the management decided Courtois is still the best option. Madrid are set to abandon their usual policy of offering only one-year extensions to players over 30, reflecting their exceptional faith in Courtois.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR COURTOIS AND MADRID?

The formal contract offer is expected to come after the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup, as Madrid are currently focused on adding another trophy in Saudi Arabia. Courtois is set to return soon to full fitness and will aim to reclaim his role as the starting goalkeeper next season. With Madrid now crowned LaLiga and Champions League champions, they will look to defend their crowns and Courtois remains a key part of their plan. Before next season, their next competitive fixture will be in the Spanish Super Cup, and the club will look to seal Courtois as their defensive leader for the future.
