Tiago Gouveia Joins OGC Nice On Loan From Benfica

OGC Nice have signed Portuguese winger Tiago Gouveia from Benfica on a one-year loan. They have an option to buy him at the end of the season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Both teams have agreed on all the documents for Gouveia‘s move to Nice. The deal includes a loan period and an option for Nice to buy him for about eight million euros. However, they are not required to make the purchase. Gouveia hasn’t played much for Benfica this season and missed their recent Champions League qualifiers. At 24, he seeks more game time and wants to shine in Ligue 1.

WHY DID NICE MAKE THE MOVE?

Nice want Gouveia to bring creativity and depth to their team, especially on the right wing or as a wing-back. They finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, qualifying for the Champions League where they lost to Benfica in the 3rd qualifying round, and aim to do better this time. Their next game is against relegation contenders Le Havre. Nice are currently 9th, three points off the league leaders, and three ahead of Le Havre.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GOUVEIA AND BOTH CLUBS?

Gouveia now has the challenge of earning a spot in Nice’s starting lineup. If he plays well, Nice might use the buy option next summer. Meanwhile, Benfica, who finished last season as Primeira Liga runners-up and are currently second in the league, will keep a close eye on his progress. Next up for Nice is a tough match against champions Le Havre, while Benfica face Alverca in a league clash, with Alverca aiming at leaving the relegation spots early on in the season.
