Tottenham Sack Ange Postecoglou Despite Europa League Triumph

Tottenham Hotspur have fired Ange Postecoglou. This decision comes just weeks after he led the team to a Europa League victory over Manchester United. It was the club’s first European trophy in 17 years.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Ange Postecoglou was fired on Friday. The club reviewed the team’s performance and decided on the change. Postecoglou made history by winning the Europa League final 1-0 against Manchester United in Bilbao on May 21. This broke a long trophy drought for Tottenham.

Despite this win, the team’s form was terrible in the Premier League. Spurs finished 17th, losing a record 22 league matches. They also lost in the Carabao Cup semifinals and exited the FA Cup in the fourth round.

Chairman Daniel Levy and the board decided that a change was needed after poor results and growing tension with supporters.

EUROPA LEAGUE GLORY OVERSHADOWED BY POOR LEAGUE FORM

Postecoglou’s first season gave hope when Tottenham finished fifth and earned a European spot. But injuries during the 2024-25 season hurt their campaign. Their historic Europa League run was overshadowed by their slide in the Premier League.

Postecoglou became only the third coach to win a European trophy with Spurs, joining legends Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. However, the board felt that troubles in the league were more important than success in Europe.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SPURS?

Tottenham now need a new manager for next season. Reports say Brentford’s Thomas Frank could be a top candidate. Spurs are in the Champions  League for 2025-26 but need a quick rebuild to regain fans’ trust and improve their league performance.

Their next game will be the UEFA Super Cup. After that, the new Premier League season begins, where they hope to avoid another relegation battle and compete for European places again.
