Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison might miss the rest of the 2024-25 season. He injured his knee in the Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt last Thursday.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Maddison left the field in the 65th minute during Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt. He had scored Spurs’ second goal. At first, the injury didn’t seem too bad, but manager Ange Postecoglou later sounded more worried. “It doesn’t look great. Probably get more clarity tomorrow but it’s fair to say it’s not looking promising,” he said after Spurs’ 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Sunday.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This injury is a big blow for Tottenham. They are fourth in the Premier League with three matches left. They have secured a Champions League spot but were hoping to catch Arsenal, who are third with a five-point lead. Injuries have hit Spurs hard this season. Maddison is the latest key player to be sidelined. The 28-year-old England international will miss the second leg of the Europa League semi-final. Spurs lead 3-1 but need to hold on without him.

WHAT THE SCAN RESULTS REVEALED

Scan results were expected on Monday. Initial fears that the injury could be serious. TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook said Maddison’s season is over. There are worries he might not be ready for pre-season or the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Earlier, young talent Lucas Bergvall also suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?

Postecoglou has a tough task picking his team for Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg in Norway. If Spurs can keep their lead, they’ll reach the final but without Maddison. They also have three Premier League matches left without him. Spurs face Newcastle, Fulham, and Sheffield United in their final games. They are aiming for a strong finish under Postecoglou in his first season in charge.
