Trabzonspor Close In On Loan Deal For Manchester United Goalkeeper Andre Onana

Trabzonspor are getting closer to signing Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United on loan. Both clubs are in talks as the Turkish team aims to build a strong team for a title run this season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Trabzonspor and Manchester United have ramped up negotiations recently for Onana. Since arriving from Inter Milan in 2023, Onana has battled injuries and lost his starting spot at United. With Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens joining and Altay Bayindir playing well, Onana’s chances for regular playing time have significantly decreased. Trabzonspor see him as a key piece for their squad, especially as Onana has not played this season despite being the team’s main goalkeeper last season, making him a target during the ongoing Turkish transfer window, which is open until September 12.

TEAM AND PLAYER PERFORMANCE THIS SEASON

After finishing seventh in the Turkish Süper Lig last season, Trabzonspor have higher expectations this year with summer roster changes, including the recent additions of Saúl Ñíguez on a free transfer. They aim to compete with leaders like Galatasaray, currently sitting second in the league with 10 points from four games. Meanwhile, Manchester United have given their starting job to Bayindir, leaving Onana out of action due to a hamstring issue from preseason. Reports indicate that Onana is currently injured and will miss about two months of action for the club, which has compounded his struggles after his £43.8 million move, as he prepares to join Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations, possibly missing part of this season.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TRABZONSPOR AND ONANA?

If the loan goes through, Onana could debut in Trabzonspor’s Süper Lig game against Gaziantep. Currently two points shy of the top spot while sitting three points above Gaziantep, they hope Onana’s arrival will improve their defense and help push for a top-three spot. Manchester United, meanwhile, will rely on Bayindir and Lammens in goal. As the Turkish transfer window is closing soon, the upcoming days will be crucial in finalizing Onana’s loan deal to Trabzonspor, especially as Manchester United are making a final push to sign a new goalkeeper as the transfer window enters its final hours.
