Txiki Begiristain Ends 13-Year Spell As Manchester City’s Director Of Football

Manchester City have confirmed that Txiki Begiristain has stepped down as director of football after 13 years and 21 trophies with the club.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On July 31, 2025, Manchester City announced that Begiristain had left his role as director of football. This transition was planned since October 2024, when it was revealed he would leave after the Club World Cup. Hugo Viana, who worked with Begiristain since April, takes full control of the role. City are preparing a formal tribute to Begiristain’s achievements in September.

BEGIRISTAIN’S LEGACY AT MAN CITY

Begiristain joined Manchester City in 2012 and transformed the club into a powerhouse in English and European football. Under his leadership, City won seven Premier League titles, two FA Cups and their first-ever Champions League crown, lifting a total of 21 trophies in 13 years. He was central in hiring Pep Guardiola and signing top players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. City’s dominance in domestic competitions has set new standards in English football.

Last season, City finished third in the Premier League, two points behind Arsenal, after winning the title in 2024. Reports indicate that City are focusing on a solid start to the new season.

WHAT NEXT FOR CITY?

Viana steps in as the director of football, having already overseen six signings worth over £150 million this summer. With the Premier League starting soon, City will want to maintain their elite standards. Their first fixture is against Wolves, who have historically been a difficult opponent. Manchester City aim to reclaim the Premier League title after finishing just above Liverpool and behind Arsenal last year.

Fans are eager to see how the club adapts under Viana’s leadership, especially with likely slow transfer activity before the September 1 deadline.
