Viktor Gyökeres scored four goals in a fabulous performance. Sporting CP beat Boavista 5-0 to go back on top of the Primeira Liga.
GYÖKERES RULES IN PORTO
Sporting CP hit back after title challengers Benfica scored ten earlier in the day. Swedish hero Gyökeres dominated in Porto.
Maximiliano Araújo scored the other goal as Sporting picked up another impressive win. Gyökeres scored an early second-half penalty to complete his third treble of the season and added a fourth late on.
Pedro Gonçalves also made his first appearance since being hospitalised after the Lisbon derby earlier this month as Sporting seized control of the title race with Gyökeres starring again.
SPORTING’S TITLE CHARGE INTENSIFIES
The Sweden striker has returned to a starring role after two games on the bench and his tally for the season has raced to 48 as Sporting easily beat Boavista.
His influence has grown in recent weeks with Pedro Gonçalves left out of the team and after coming off the bench against Atlético Madrid he has returned to a starring role.
With Benfica winning earlier in the day, this was a statement win for Sporting and Gyökeres did the damage again.
WHAT’S NEXT IN THE TITLE RACE?
Sporting’s next match is a must-win in their title race as they host title rivals Braga, who missed the chance to go top of the table when they conceded a late equaliser against Benfica.
The top three teams are separated by one point and every dropped point by Sporting, Braga or Benfica could be fatal as Gyökeres leads the way.
Sporting remain top of the league by virtue of their head-to-head record against Benfica ahead of that massive game on Friday night.
They are still top on points difference despite Braga having had two more shots on target than Sporting and again creating a couple of clear-cut chances.
