Viktor Gyökeres Signs for Arsenal: Swedish Striker Chooses Premier League Giants

Viktor Gyökeres has officially joined Arsenal. The Swedish striker said the club felt right after speaking with manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta.

GYÖKERES EXPLAINS HIS CHOICE

The 27-year-old striker said, “I just felt that Arsenal was the right club for me. What I heard from Mikel and Andrea when I was speaking with them, and just what I’ve seen in the past years, how they’ve been playing football. That made me choose Arsenal.”

Gyökeres signed a five-year contract with Arsenal, as part of a deal worth up to €73.5 million, including bonuses, with Sporting CP confirming the specifics of the transfer. This move ends weeks of speculation as Arsenal sought to strengthen their attack and had identified Gyökeres as their top target.

WHY THIS TRANSFER MATTERS

Arsenal was determined to add a proven goalscorer this summer after finishing last season ten points behind Premier League champions Liverpool. Gyökeres arrives after two spectacular years at Sporting CP, where he scored 54 goals in 52 matches last season—a performance that established him as one of Europe’s top strikers.

With Gabriel Jesus struggling with injuries and Kai Havertz often playing in midfield, Arsenal lacked a consistent central striker last season. Gyökeres’ arrival is expected to provide the clinical edge needed to challenge for the title once again.

LOOKING AHEAD: GYÖKERES AND ARSENAL’S NEXT STEPS

Gyökeres will immediately fly out to join Arsenal’s preseason tour in Asia, where they will face Newcastle United in Singapore before playing Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong. These matches will help integrate him into Arteta’s system ahead of the new Premier League season, which starts in less than two weeks. Arsenal ended the 2024-25 campaign as runners-up, with 74 points—just above Manchester City but well behind Liverpool.

The club hopes that with Gyökeres leading the line, they can close the gap with Liverpool and finally win the league title again.
