Xabi Alonso Praises Vinícius Júnior Amid Exit Rumors

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says he is “very happy” with Vinicius Junior despite speculation about the Brazilian’s future. Alonso stressed that Vinicius must keep working hard and that his reaction to being substituted is normal for a top player.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Vinicius Junior was substituted in the 77th minute during Real Madrid‘s 2-0 win against Espanyol on Saturday. The forward looked visibly frustrated at being withdrawn, tossing away a water bottle before having a brief chat with Alonso on the touchline. After the match, Alonso addressed questions about Vinicius’s reaction, stating that he was happy with the player and understood the feeling, as he had been a footballer himself. Alonso explained, “He has to continue working as he is doing, the season has just started!”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Real Madrid have made a perfect start to the 2025-26 league season, winning all five of their matches to put them top of the table. As reported, Real Madrid have won all five of their opening games under Xabi Alonso, collecting 15 points and sitting atop La Liga. Vinicius has featured in six games for Los Blancos but has twice been left out of the starting XI by Alonso, amid uncertainty over his long-term future. There have been reports that contract talks have stalled, although Alonso insists Vinicius is in his plans. The attacker’s frustration and speculation could potentially open the door for a move away for Vinicius.

WHAT NEXT?

Real Madrid’s next match is against newly-promoted, and struggling Levante in the top flight, which follows La Liga and Champions League fixtures against Atletico de Madrid and Kairat Almaty, respectively. Notably, Xabi Alonso praised Vinicius Jr’s hard work and positive attitude after taking him off during a match. Vinicius is back for Los Blancos after an underwhelming World Cup with Brazil in which he was criticized for his behaviour.
