Xavi Simons Joins Tottenham in €60m Transfer from RB Leipzig
Tottenham Hotspur have signed Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for €60 million. The 22-year-old has a long-term contract with Spurs until 2030, with an option for two more years.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Tottenham completed the deal after quick negotiations with RB Leipzig. Simons had a medical in London and signed his contract. This ended weeks of speculation about his future. Chelsea were also interested, but Tottenham moved quickly before the transfer window closed. The initial fee might increase due to bonuses. According to reports, RB Leipzig let Xavi Simons leave training to go to London to meet with Premier League teams.
WHY DID TOTTENHAM MOVE FOR SIMONS?
Spurs needed a new attacking midfielder after losing out on Eberechi Eze to Arsenal. Tottenham did not want to lose Simons to Chelsea. Known for his creativity, Simons scored 10 goals and provided 7 assists in 25 Bundesliga appearances last season while on loan at RB Leipzig. Tottenham are hoping Simons will help their push for a top-four place in the Premier League.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SIMONS AND SPURS?
Simons may make his debut in Tottenham’s match against Bournemouth. Spurs are third in the table, level on points with Arsenal and Liverpool, who play each other this weekend. Their rivals for the top four are close, making every new signing important. Bournemouth, Tottenham’s next opponent, are in 10th place and have one win and one loss from two matches this season. Simons has a chance to impress as he starts his new chapter in North London.
